Louis Vuitton trunk c.1893
Superb Louis Vuitton trunk from 1893 covered with the first checkerboard fabric of the brand. The term "Marque L.Vuitton déposée" was already used in the 19th century to protect the brand from reproductions.
It is a cabin model, originally stored under the traveller's bed during a cruise ship journey. It has a metallic finish, with steel handles and edges and a brass lock. The trunk is decorated with 4 blue circles on each corner, with the original owner's initials painted on each side. It is noticeable that these initials have been changed, probably because the trunk had a second owner during its travels. These paintings allowed the staff of the original owners to recognise the different trunks when the luggage arrived.
The interior of the trunk is covered with a beige linen canvas, with ribbon upholstery. The Louis Vuitton manufacturer's label is glued to the interior, with the authenticity number of the luggage and the various shop addresses of the time. One can also notice on the label the different medals won by Louis Vuitton at the universal and international exhibitions of the 19th century.
Good condition: The trunk is in good condition for its age, with a very nice patina. One can notice that the edges are dented from many trips and that the outer canvas is marked by a long exposure to daylight. Some tears on the inner cloth and some small grafts on the checkerboard cloth.

THE COFFEE TABLE, CABIN SIZE
These trunks disappeared from Louis Vuitton or Goyard sales catalogs when the airplane supplanted the liners in the immediate post-war period. For lack of traveling today with these cabin trunks, their format is ideal to make a coffee table. Often protected by a glass, it is the assurance of having an unusual table, full of history and symbol of an art of living at the beginning of the 20th century.
