Louis Vuitton cabin trunk c.1916
Superb 1916 Louis Vuitton cabin trunk protected by brown Lozine edging and covered with stenciled monogram canvas. The trunk is fitted with brass jewellery, with three main clasps stamped "Louis Vuitton Paris".
There are two leather handles (restored to match the original handles) and the initials of the first owner "E.J.S" painted on each side. The trunk is fitted with 4 castors. 2 superb red family colours are also painted on the trunk, colours used at the time to differentiate between different items of luggage when unloading from a liner or train.
The main feature of this piece is the canvas glued to the bottom of the luggage. The canvas is monogrammed LV Vert et Bleu, an extremely rare coating used by Louis Vuitton on special orders. This canvas was probably under the hand of the craftsman when the trunk was made. It was common practice at the time to salvage pieces of canvas to cover the bottom of a piece of luggage, the least important part, and we thank this craftsman today for choosing this sample!
The inside of the trunk is covered in cotton canvas, with a pad in the bonnet, restored to match the original. It bears the Louis Vuitton authenticity label and serial number.
Very good condition: The trunk is in superb condition for its time, with a few marks on the leather.

These trunks disappeared from Louis Vuitton or Goyard sales catalogs when the airplane supplanted the liners in the immediate post-war period. For lack of traveling today with these cabin trunks, their format is ideal to make a coffee table. Often protected by a glass, it is the assurance of having an unusual table, full of history and symbol of an art of living at the beginning of the 20th century.
