Louis Vuitton trunk c.1922
Beautiful Louis Vuitton trunk from 1922, originally used to store shoes, up to 14 pairs of shoes and/or 2 to 6 pairs of boots. Thanks to its original function, the proportions of this trunk are very practical today, it is not bulky but quite impressive. The trunk is covered with a stenciled monogrammed canvas, with lozine borders and brass jewelry. Typical Louis Vuitton manufacture of this period, the most luxurious finish.
We notice on the side clasps and the central lock the Louis Vuitton stamp with the different addresses of the stores of the time.
The trunk is equipped with two leather handles (the left handle is restored). The original family colors, red and black, are also present, allowing the family's staff to recognize their clients' trunks when the luggage arrives at the seaport or train station. The bottom of the trunk is monogrammed and equipped with 4 wheels.
The interior is lined with orange vuittonite, with brown suede in the hood to protect the shoes. We find the label of the manufacturer Louis VUITTON with the serial number of the trunk.
Very good condition : The trunk is in superb condition for its age, with a very nice patina of the outer canvas. Inner canvas a little damaged on the left side.
This model is particularly rare because few travelers at that time could afford to travel with a trunk of this size to store only shoes. Ideal today to put at the end of a bed or against a wall, with a large storage surface inside.

A little bit of history... Louis Vuitton was born in 1854, a Layetier - Packer manufacturer initially specialized in the manufacture of storage boxes. Louis Vuitton's great revolution was to have anticipated the development of rail transportation, at a time when travel by carriage was predominant. In order to travel by train, the trunks had to be stacked in the carriages and their curved shape at the time prevented this simple storage.
By proposing the first flat trunks, Louis Vuitton invented the first luxury trunk. He quickly added noble materials to the interior of his trunks, with specific fittings, leather-protected edges, solid brass clasps... Over the years, Louis Vuitton perfected his trunks to meet the demands of his wealthy customers. In 1872, in order to distinguish his pieces from the competitors who were all starting to copy his production, Louis decided to invent the first patterned fabric to cover his luggage: the stripes. We then found in 1888 the checkerboard canvas, followed by the famous LV monogram on a jacquard canvas of 1896.
