Louis Vuitton trunk c.1892
Interesting 1892 Louis Vuitton hat trunk, covered in the emblematic LV Damier fabric and protected by metal trim. It features a central brass lock stamped "Louis Vuitton Paris" and 2 black handles marked "LV". This canvas invented by Louis was proposed from 1888 to 1896, historically the brand's first patented canvas.
On the left side is a label from the Grand Hotel du Louvre in Aix-les-Bains, as well as a German rail transport label. The initials of the original owner, A.L, are painted in red on each side.
Despite its age, the interior of this trunk is in very good condition. Originally designed to accompany a woman on a journey, this luggage features all the compartments essential for storing feathered hats at the time. The first frame is compartmentalized to hold veils, shawls or other small garments, while the bottom is equipped with a ribboned cage to store all types of hats.
The Louis Vuitton authenticity label, with the various store addresses of the period and the trunk's serial number, is glued to the tank beneath the ribbon cage.
This trunk was made during Louis Vuitton's lifetime at his historic workshops in Asnières sur Seine, four years before the famous LV motif was first introduced.
Very good condition: The trunk is in superb condition for its age, with a few small marks on the outer and inner canvas.

LOUIS VUITTON HATS TRUNKS FOR WOMAN
"Women's hat trunks are perhaps the only trunks on which fashion has any serious influence. The real jewels which leave the hands of our Parisian milliners every day vary so much and so often in shape and size, that the old mushroom system has had to be abandoned for the cage model which can accommodate hats, large or small, without fear of deterioration" (Exhibition report, Turin 1911).
Invented by Louis Vuitton at the end of the 19th century, these "paradise" cages considerably improved travel conditions for women at the time. They ensured that women could leave without the slightest risk of damaging their precious hats. Some cages of this type could hold up to 60 hats!
The Louis Vuitton trunks for decoration
If you still can't travel with these hat trunks, today they're highly sought-after to decorate a bedroom or living room. The format is perfectly suited to a bedside table, or placed against an armchair as a small side table.
The volume is much less "bulky" than a classic trunk, and the proportions are often very interesting. What's more, the inner cage allows you to store sheets or blankets more easily than in a large compartmentalized trunk.
