The Louis Vuitton stores

The Louis Vuitton stores

Malletier depuis 1854

1854 - PARIS, 4 rue neuve des Capucines

Louis Vuitton creates his company and sets up shop at 4 rue neuve des Capucines (the first address of the Martin company, which will later become GOYARD). He married his wife the same year and established his workshops at 76 rue du Rocher.

Another store dedicated to fashion packing cases was opened 3 years later, right in front of the first store dedicated to the sale of flat trunks.

These two stores closed in 1871 after the destruction of the store and the stripping of the workshops during the Paris commune.

Opening of the large factory in Asnières sur Seine - 4500 square meters of land, which could be supplied with wood from the Seine for the manufacture of trunks (Louis Vuitton used poplar trees from the Oise valley). Louis and Emilie moved in above the workshops to keep a foot on the ground outside Paris.

1871 - PARIS, 1er rue Scribe

The store on rue Neuve des Capucines became too small for Louis Vuitton, who took advantage of the closing of the famous Jockey Club to buy this large store on rue Scribe 1. Ideally located near the new Opera Garnier and across from the Grand Hotel where many wealthy customers stay. From then on, the Vuittons settled permanently in Asniere.

Some made in 1871 have labels indicating the transition to the new store on rue Scribe, "formerly the Jockey Club saddlery" (see photo, top left of the label).

1889 - LONDON, 454 rue de Strand

The store moved to 454 Strand Street, opposite Charing Cross Station. George and Louis chose this location imagining that many travelers coming out of the station would be interested in their trunks and travel goods... They quickly realized that these travelers already had their luggage when they arrived at the station and that the location was not the best place for the store.

George finally found a store 10 years later in the very famous New Bond Street at 149. The transition between the first Oxford Street store and the store at 454 Stand Street can be seen on some of the trunk labels, where the address is corrected with a stamp (see image). This Louis Vuitton trunk may have been sold in this store (link)

1954 - Paris, 70 bis avenue Marceau

The Avenue des Champs Elysées had become too touristy for Louis Vuitton's clientele, so Georges and Gaston decided to open a new store at 70bis Avenue de Monceau.

The date is not chosen by chance, it is the centenary of the creation of the company. In 1955, a toy store was opened in addition to the trunk and luggage store.
